ONE B1G THING book review

I once again was blessed to review a book through BookSneeze.  I chose this particular book because I had recently read a book on world missions where the author was challenged to write in one sentence the most important thing he was going to do with the rest of his life.  That reminded me of in Ps when David said “this one thing”.  When I saw the list of offered reading for BookSneeze this book stood out to me.  I’ve been intrigued with learning more about discovering shat you were born to do.

The book is laid out in twelve easy reading chapters that each begin with two quotes from well known personnel to introduce the chapter subject.  They were great quotes that were cause for thinking.  Such as “You can’t wait for inspiration.  You have to go after it with a club.” [John London}  Besides the valuable quotes scattered throughout the book, Phil Cooke (filmmaker, media producer and speaker) uses many illustrations from his life and others to support his teaching on the living a life-on-purpose that leaves a lasting mark on the world.

Your One Big Thing is really the quest for what you were put on the earth to accomplish.  It’s not about a particular job or personality type, it’s more about your purpose.  Phil posed four questions to help in discovering your one big thing.  1.  What comes easy for you?  2.  What do you love?  3. What drives you crazy? 4. What do you want to leave behind?

I still don’t believe I can say what would be my one big thing but it’s made me do some self-evaluation on what I am spending my time and efforts to narrow down my main purpose and what kind of legacy I will leave behind in my sphere of influence.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

100 Days of Prayer

“Your 100 Day Prayer” takes you on a spiritual journey of prayer. The book reads like a devotional with a short commentary, followed by a prayer concerning the devotional subject and space to record thoughts like a journal. I found the devotionals to be practical with many tidbits of encouragement. I have several family prayer requests that I have been believing for quite some time. This book has helped me to fight discouragement and keep expecting to see change.
“We have the joy of living with meaning and purpose in this world and the next, all along being motivated and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the impossible in a mundane and predictable world.”
The daily encouragement to journal has been a good discipline for me as I keep expecting “the impossible”.

First Book Review – Thank You, God, for Mommy

This is a perfect book choice as a first book review for me.  As a mother of four, grandmother of two and also experience with home daycare for several years, Childrens Ministry Director, toddler daycare teacher, VBS Director, etc. I have been immersed in the world of children’s books and interests.  Even before reading the book, I loved the padded cover and hard pages.  Great for the young age targeted for this book.  The pictures and rhyming cadence of the book are wonderful.  Kids love animals and the panda mom and cub are so very cute.  It’s a book that both moms and children will love to read again and again.  (And we know how much those toddlers love to hear a book over and over!)  I especially loved the verse on one page that speaks to my mothers heart, even with grown children.  “Thank You, God, for Mommy. Her trust and faith in You.  She looks to You for answers,  She knows You’ll see us through.”  This would be a great book to find in an Easter basket for a little one or  a Mother’s Day present for that special Mom in your life.  Enjoy!!

Secretariat the movie

My thoughtful sister-in-law, knowing my love of horses, bought the DVD, Secretariat and sent it to me.  I had heard favorable reviews from friends who had seen the movie but had not watched it myself. So Friday night Bob, Micheal (our 13 year old grandson) and I settled in with our bowls of popcorn for movie night.  We did have a little technical difficulty as our DVD player screen setting had been changed so it wasn’t a full screen viewing.  We couldn’t seem to find where to make the change so we settled for the smaller screen.  Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the movie.  I usually favor movies that are based on true stories and love when they do the true life wrap-up at the end. Even better when they show the real life characters portrayed by the actors and this movie did not disappoint me with their story wrap-up.  Not only did they report on Secretariats’ owner but they pointed out that she was in the final race scene as an extra in the stands. (Did you know that in the movie Rudy, the real life Rudy was also in the movie final game scene as a fan in the stands?)

I did not realize that Secretariat owns records that have not been broken since he set them in the 70’s.  In the 30 years since he has raced there have been so many improvements in horse breeding, management, feeding , etc. and yet he has held his own in the competitive world of horse racing.

This movie is not just for horse lovers as Bob and Micheal seemed to enjoy it also.  And I very much appreciated watching a family friendly movie.  Now we have to watch it again as Bob figured out how to change the screen setting so we can watch Secretariat race on our full 42″ screen.

She has mentioned this to me before but I find that I would rather talk than write. So she tried a different approach, my love for reading. I can join a book review program that uses a blog to post the review. I’m going to give it a try and see what happens. I’ll let you know when I my first book arrives in the mail for me to read and review. Off to check out the selection of books offered at this time…
